Senior Property Lawyer

£56,821 – £62,445 | Remote working | Annualised hours

As Senior Property Lawyer you will lead on some of the most significant property development and regeneration projects in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse — including the economic redevelopment of Abingdon.

You’ll be part of a compact but capable team, reporting directly to the Head of Legal, and working on complex commercial and residential property matters that genuinely shape the future of the area.

    • Be at the Centre of Regeneration - The councils are driving major economic redevelopment projects across Abingdon and the surrounding districts - this role gives you the chance to lead on high-profile land acquisitions, commercial leases, development agreements and strategic disposals.

    • Complex, High-Value Casework - You’ll handle some of the most challenging property legal work the council deals with, including compulsory purchase, affordable housing funding, and town centre regeneration projects. This is legal work that matters - and stretches your skills.

    • Compact Team, Big Impact - You’ll join a small and well-supported property legal team, just two fee earners and an admin team, and will be the one of the senior property lawyers in the group. You’ll play a vital mentoring role and help shape team direction, without formal line management.

    • Hybrid or Fully Remote - Your designated base is Abbey House in Abingdon, but how often you go in is up to you. The councils focus on outcomes, not office presence - so you can shape a working pattern that suits your life.

    • Draft and negotiate leases, licences, deeds, CPOs, notices, and land registration.

    • Advise on affordable housing development, including funding and nominations agreements.

    • Manage legal work related to footpaths, highways, byelaws, and service agreements.

    • Provide legal input on major regeneration schemes, including strategic partnerships and redevelopment deals.

    • Advise councillors, senior officers, and committee meetings — drafting clear legal reports and offering pragmatic advice.

    • Guide and support junior team members in property law casework.

    • Step in for the Property Team Leader where needed.

    • A qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive with a current practising certificate.

    • Extensive experience in commercial and residential property transactions — including complex, high-value matters.

    • Confident working independently and supporting more junior staff informally.

    • Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills.

    • Strong understanding of property law, local authority powers, and regeneration schemes.

    • Comfortable advising at senior level — including councillors and heads of service.

    • Positive, practical, and committed to public sector excellence.
